Hair Loss Caused by Chemotherapy

Anagen Effluvium, also known as “cancer treatment hair loss”,  is the scientific name of hair loss caused by Chemotherapy. In this type of condition, sudden loss of hair is experienced by the patient as a direct result of the exposure to chemicals and radiation involved in Chemotherapy. Obviously, this is a condition experienced by all sorts of cancer patients that undergo radiation treatment. It is practically inevitable for them as nearly 100% of those that undergo Chemo will also suffer from hair loss as a side effect.

The Science Behind It

Chemotherapy is the primary cause of the hair loss condition known as Anagen Effluvium. Unlike Telogen Effluvium (another common type of hair loss which is caused by stress or a stressful event), hair follicles do not undergo the resting phase in Anagen Effluvium. In most cases, hair loss occurs in patients after around one to three weeks of their exposure to the radiation or chemicals. Although Chemo may be the main culprit, exposure to other toxic chemicals including Arsenic and Thallium have also been known to cause this type of hair loss.

When a patient undergoes Chemotherapy, the treatment kills the cancer cells. By doing so, it may also prevent the growth of hair as well as cause the hair to shred. It is common for Chemo patients to lose up to more than 90% of their hair as a side effect of their treatment. The drugs in Chemotherapy that are most likely the cause of hair loss includes Cytosine Arabinoside, Cisplatinum, and Amascarine, among others.

The Good News

However, the good news regarding hair loss caused by Chemotherapy is that it is mostly temporary. In a majority of cases, hair growth in patients will go back to normal after the treatment is ceased. In fact, some patients even claim that their new hair is actually healthier and thicker than the hair they previously had. Others still experience hair that may have a different texture or perhaps even a different shade or color.
