Hair Loss Caused by Fungus

Although there are a number of known fungal infections that may cause some type of hair loss, Tinea Capitis is probably the most common type of hair loss fungal infection. This particular infection actually affects the scalp and is also known in some circles as the scalp ringworm. Some believe that this condition was given this name because of the appearance of particular markings in affected areas of the scalp.

However, it is not, as what the name suggests, a parasitic infection caused by actual worms. Hair loss caused by fungus is more common in children but, there are still a lot of adults that fall victim to this unwanted condition. When it comes to the symptoms, the pattern of hair growth will differ on a case by case basis.

3 Types of Tinea Capitis Fungal Infections

There are basically three types of Tinea Capitis fungal infections: M. audouinii, M. canis, and T. tonsurans.

1. M. audouinii, which is also known as Tinea favosa or Favus, is a type of hair infection pattern. A lot of experts agree on the fact that this is the most destructive or damaging among the three. Here, the fungus resides inside the hair shaft which causes inflammation and the occurrence of scarring and yellow crusts.

2. The second type of fungal infection in the scalp is M. canis. This particular infection causes the formation of an Ectothrix pattern. This fungus lives on the exterior of the hair surface which causes a combination of scaly patches as well as evident hair loss.

3. The growth pattern that appears in T. tonsurans is what’s known as Endothirx. This is probably the most common among the three although it may also be the one that causes the least damage. The virus resides in the hair shaft which causes the hair to break off as well as the emergence of bald patches.

The good news is that hair loss caused by fungus is very treatable. There are a lot of specialized shampoos as well as herb extracts that will be very effective in eradicating this unwanted condition.
