Hair Loss Caused by Thyroid

One of the best barometer’s of one’s health is his or her hair. This is so because hair cells are among the fastest growing cells in the body. Naturally, an unhealthy body wouldn’t be able to sufficiently provide nutrients for hair cells causing them to stop growing or even start falling out. Although there are a lot of medical situations or conditions that may cause hair loss such as surgery, certain medications, and nutritional deficiencies, hair loss caused by thyroid issues is definitely one of the more prominent afflictions among men and women alike.

Common Thyroid Issues

One of the first tests a doctor will carry out on a patient who’s complaining of hair loss would be a thyroid function test. This is because a considerable percentage of hair loss issues can be traced back to problems with the thyroid. There are basically two types of issues – Hypothyroidism and Hyperthyroidism.

1. Hypothyroidism occurs when there is an underproduction of Thyroxin – the Thyroid hormone. The body is unable to produce the body’s demands for this hormone which causes a number of problems for the patient.

2. Hyperthyroidism is a condition wherein too much Thyroxin is produced by the Thyroid gland. Those who may be suffering from auto-immune diseases are especially vulnerable to this type of condition.

Some Helpful Hints

Before any assumptions are made, it is necessary to get an evaluation first. Although hair loss caused by Thyroid issues is indeed a common occurrence, there are a lot of other causes that should be considered.

People who are actually diagnosed with Thyroid problems should then make sure that it is not their Thyroid drug that’s causing the hair loss. There are a lot of Thyroid drugs that do not carry this unwanted side effect. One may also want to look into alternative treatments. There are a lot of materials out there that provide information on how to deal with both Hypo and Hyperthyroidism without the use of traditional medicine.
