FDA-Approved Hair Loss Treatment

There is no known lasting cure for hair loss caused by male pattern baldness. The most you can do is delay the inevitable occasion of going completely bald at the top of your head. Rather than be hooked on hair treating medication, many are resorting to shaving their head completely bald as this is now considered as a hair style common even among young men.

Otherwise, be prepared to spend lavishly on treating your thinning hair. It is best to start it early while the follicles can still be stimulated to grow hair. Nothing much can be done if the follicles are already dead. There are two medications that have shown themselves effective in stimulating hair growth – Minoxidil and Finasteride, the only two FDA-approved hair loss treatment medications.

The Only 2 FDA-Approved Treatment for Hair Loss

1. Minoxidil

Research on Minoxidil has proven its effectiveness in dilating the blood vessels in the scalp to let more blood nutrients stimulate hair follicles into producing more hair. Early hair loss cases can yield satisfactory results in just 3-6 months of continued use with healthier hair strands. Later cases will only net hair growth of finer hair over the same period. Two brands carry the substance, the more popular over-the-counter Rogaine containing 2% Minoxidil and the prescription drug Loniten which many find more effective due to its higher 5% Minoxidil content. Rogaine also has a prescriptive strength variant.

2. Finasteride

Initially prescribed for patients suffering from prostatic hyperplasia under the brand name Proscar, Finasteride’s value resides in its ability to inhibit 5-Alpha-Reductase enzyme from converting testosterone into DHT which is the main culprit behind male pattern baldness or androgenetic alopecia. It has been rebranded to Propecia which is a prescripted medication in oral pill form. Many prefer Proscar for its stronger Finasteride content and can be charged against their health insurance as a prescribed medication. Propecia is considered a cosmetic drug and cannot be charged.

There are other medication that has no FDA-approved hair treatment substance but uses other chemical compound and herbal extracts that do the same thing with similar efficacies. Some advertise to have Saw Palmetto and other herbal extracts in them which can be just as effective.
