6 Types of Hair Loss

Hair loss is just like any other kind of genetic condition. It’s something that comes whether one wants it or not. Unfortunately, this condition does not choose its victims. There’s basically nothing one can do to avoid this condition if it is nature’s intention for him to have it. Although it can be prevented or delayed, the fact is that it cannot be avoided.

Although there is no one size fits all remedy for this particular condition, there are a lot of options for people who want to get rid of their hair loss problems. One can make use of hair loss products or perhaps even undergo a variety of treatments to rid themselves of this unwanted condition.

The 6 Different Hair Loss Types

1. Alopecia Areata

This condition is known as hair’s own auto-immune disease. That is, the immune system attacks hair follicles because it wrongly believes that the follicles are foreign. Although there is no cure for this condition, treatments include products that contain Corticosteroids, Dithranol, Retin A (Tretinoin), Topical Minoxidil, and Zinc.

2. Androgenetic Alopecia

This is the most common type of hair loss condition and it actually accounts for around 95 percent of hair loss problems in the world. Androgenetic Alopecia manifests itself in individuals that experience a receding hairline, which would eventually lead to the thinning of the hair at the top of the head. Products that have Minoxidil, Propecia (finasteride), Retin-A, Zinc, Azelaic Acid, and Saw Palermo extract have been known to help treat this condition.

3. Anagen Effluvium

This particular hair loss condition occurs in patients that undergo certain kinds of radiation treatment or Chemotherapy. It is also known as Cancer Treatment Hair Loss. Sudden hair loss is usually experienced by said patients within one to three weeks of their exposure to the chemicals. Unfortunately, there is currently no known treatment that can stop this type of hair loss. The good thing is that it is only temporary and majority of patients actually claim to have grown thicker and healthier hair after their radiation treatment.

4. Self Induced Hair Loss

Obviously, it involves an individual that consciously or unconsciously inflicts hair loss onto himself. The two common types of self induced hair loss are Traction Alopecia (caused by excessive and continuous pulling of the hair for the purposes of styling) and Trichotillomania (caused by continuous and intentional plucking and pulling of the hair).

5. Telogen Effluvium

This type of hair loss occurs in individuals that experience severe or sudden stress which causes the shedding of hair. In most cases, the hair loss occurs after around 3 months of the stressful event. Although it is mostly temporary, there are some unfortunate cases wherein the hair fails to grow back.

6. Scarring Elopecia

The last kind of hair loss condition involves the inflammation of some hair follicles because of an infection. Scarring Elopecia is easier to identify because of the presence of rough patches on the scalps of patients. There are a variety of causes of this condition which include, but are not limited to Congenital Atrichia, Aplasia Cutis Congenita, Pseudopelade of Brocq, Lichen Planus, and Discoid Lipus Erythematosus.
