Women Hair Loss Causes

Hair loss in women shares some commonality with those in men. But there are special causes that are clearly specific to the female gender, such as sudden stress or trauma related to childbirth and pregnancy termination that upset the hormone balance in the body, as well as PCOS or Polycystic Ovary Syndrome which can disrupt endocrine functions and case hair loss.

4 Common Causes of Women Hair Loss

1. Androgenetic Alopecia

The most prevalent hair loss type in women is androgenetic alopecia, or female pattern baldness, the counterpart of the same type in men known as male pattern baldness. This is basically a hormonal imbalance condition where the body is genetically prompted to produce more male androgen hormones responsible for thinning hair in women. Hair loss causes are specially rooted in the overproduction of DHT or dihydrotestosterone, a hormone that gets into the hair follicles to inhibit hair growth and replacement of those that have fallen out. Until such time that a commercial grade genetic therapy becomes available, the most that hair loss treatment can do is to impede the action of DHT as well as improve blood flow to the follicles.

2. Nutritional Deficiency

Any kind of nutritional deficiency can lead to all sorts of health problems, not the least of which is skin disorders that include hair loss. Hair is 100% keratin, a form of protein. Deprive yourself of proteins, and there’d be nothing hair follicles can manufacture hair with. Vitamin deficiency is another. Just about all the known vitamins are needed for hair follicle to thrive, particularly the vitamin B complexes.

3. Chemotherapy and Medication

Classified medically as Anagen Effluvium, hair loss can be triggered by chemicals introduced to the body. Women diagnosed with cancer are most visible if they undergo chemotherapy. Hair loss is immediate, usually within a month of the first session. Drugs often prescribed for certain ailments may also have hair loss as a side effect. Once you notice this side effect, it’s best to consult with your doctor for a possible change in medication.

4. Health and Lifestyle Changes

Anemia and thyroid disorders are known to cause hair loss in both men and women. Hair loss causes include sudden lifestyle changes like undergoing a crash diet and traumatic episodes like pregnancy termination, childbirth and menopause.
